June 19, a.k.a. Juneteenth, is a holiday that marks the anniversary of the day in 1865 when the enslaved people of Galveston, Tex., were told they were free, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Traditionally commemorated by those with ties to the region, its observance has grown since becoming a federal holiday in 2021.
