Tsakani – The iNkosi Albert Luthuli Oral (Inkal Oral) History Competition is a national annual competition open to primary and secondary school teachers and learners from Grades eight to 11.

“The competition aims to increase interest in history and encourage scholars throughout SA to engage with their shared history and explore their personal and community histories.

“This project aims to acknowledge, in a significant way, the efforts of promising students and the dedication of their teachers,” said teacher Nomthandazo Ndlovu.

Tsakane Primary School learners recently participated in the oral history district competition held at Anzac Primary School.

Ndlovu said the competition had participants from other primary schools around Tsakani, Springs, Kwa-Thema and Daveyton.

“The Inkal Oral competition had various categories: storytelling, story writing, poetry and letter writing.

“Three learners from our school performed excellently in three categories. Grade Four learner Amukelani Maseko achieved third place in the intermediate phase under the letter writing category.

“In poetry, Thandolwethu Zwane, who is in Grade Five, placed third, and Olwenkosi Sibande, who is in Grade Six, attained first position in story writing,” said Ndlovu.

Ndlovu concluded by mentioning how proud she is of her learners, saying the competition increased the learners’ self-esteem and interest in becoming young historians. As a school, they are grateful for the opportunity.
