With the nearing of the festive season, Kwa-Thema SAPS has noticed a disturbing trend in vehicle hijackings in the area.

Recent statistics show a significant increase in incidents, particularly during weekends between 19:00 and 05:00.
Targeted vehicles:

Thieves are targeting vehicles of individuals returning from parties, clubs, and social gatherings, as well as those visiting friends, family, or romantic partners who park outside.

The criminals prey on unsuspecting drivers who may be distracted or feel safe in their vehicles.

Safety tips:

To minimise your risk, follow these essential guidelines:
• Avoid parking in isolated areas. Opt for well-lit, populated spots.
• Keep windows and doors locked.
• Stay alert and awake. Avoid dozing off or being distracted.
• Keep valuables out of sight.
• Limit time spent in the vehicle.
• Keep phone charged and accessible.
• Be mindful of surroundings. Watch for suspicious individuals or vehicles.

Additional precautions:
• Travel with a companion: When possible, travel with someone.
• Inform someone of your whereabouts: Let a friend or family member know your location.
• Keep emergency numbers handy: Save important contacts, like the police services

What to do in a hijacking situation:
• Stay calm: Avoid confrontation.
• Co-operate: Give up valuables if demanded.
• Escape safely: If possible, slowly drive away or exit the vehicle.
• Call the police: Report the incident immediately.
