Kwa-Thema – The Kwa-Thema Society for the Care of the Aged recently celebrated Women’s Month in tribute to the more than 20 000 women who marched to the Union Buildings on August 9, 1956, in protest against the extension of pass laws to women.

The celebration, held under the theme, ‘Healing as a woman’, saw women from all walks of life share experiences and words of encouragement.

The conversations centred on the traumatic experiences women go through. As elders, they promoted self-forgiveness, healing and acceptance.

One of the speakers, Sarah Mohlala (68), reminded the women of their strength and ability to overcome any issues, saying women could overcome many challenges through prayer and faith.

She encouraged the women to trust in God and said women are celebrated as active agents of change and social transformation.

“Women encounter many problems daily. I know we have all encountered problems, but it is crucial you never underestimate yourself when going through trials and tribulations.

“God gave every one of us strength to walk in faith. Some of us were abused by our husbands, our children, and neighbours sometimes undermine our courage and abilities, but through everything, heal and believe in yourself,” she said.

She highlighted that women in pain must find freedom in Christ while mentioning that learning to share their stories is a part of the journey towards emotional healing.

“There is something meaningful about sharing in a historical sisterhood of pain, loss and redemption. When women feel like no one else has gone through what they have, loneliness and shame inevitably follow. This is why it is important to show one another the trials and tribulations of women in the Bible,” she added.

The celebration ended joyously with dancing, praise and worship songs.
