Tsakani – EMPD Social Crime Prevention Unit officers and other stakeholders shared their knowledge on domestic violence with community members at the Ext 10 clinic on June 19.

EMPD spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa said with this joint venture with other stakeholders they wanted to reach the masses and teach them about domestic violence.

“South Africa is one of the countries that experiences the highest incidents of domestic violence and it is the most frequent and widespread human rights abuse in the country. Officers also shared knowledge on the various types of rape.”

Thepa said rape is a violent crime involving sexual acts forced on one person by another. She further mentioned that officers highlighted that rape can occur in many ways.

“Among the discussions were diminished-capacity rape, age-related rape, incest, partner rape, acquaintance rape and aggravated rape.

“Officers shared the various types of rape because most people are unaware that they are victims of rape,” added Thepa.

“It is critical to remember that whatever form of rape occurs, including rape by strangers in conjunction with hate crime, it is always the fault of the rapist and never the fault of the victim,” she added.

She further cited that the EMPD will continue to visit clinics or health care centres to engage the public in these different types of rape.
