Tsakani – Gugu Tshabangu, known on stage as ‘Osu’, believes she was born an artist.
“I discovered I could sing at a young age and loved it more and more as I grew. One day, I heard Frank Ocean for the first time, and a switch flipped in my head, and my life changed forever.
“I started appreciating the art of sound more. That was in 2013 when I was in Grade Nine. I started writing music then. I’ve never played an instrument but have always wanted to learn the guitar. I love electric guitars,” said Gugu.
She said her uncles used to quiz her on hip-hop, and she knew Tupac Shakur before she could understand his music.
She added that she has always found herself in spaces that encouraged music and she used to imitate Beyoncé. Gugu has worked with Ora Kola, LipzDaCub, Earnest Prince, Gani-Y, BlazeRailey and 3Gee.
“I aspire to work with Ben September, OroWaAfrika, and Maglera. I am working on a single titled Mfundo about my life. It will released on May 31.
“My other song, Last Forever, will also be released next year. I did this song with Ice and Wavey, and it is a feature which will be released because my voice is the main vocal,” added Gugu.
Gugu said her goal is to be comfortable and content with her art, saying so many things happen; things change, thoughts change, and so does everything else.
“Once you’ve found a spot to stand in, just build. In vague terms, I’d say I just want to be comfortable in my art. I make songs about love.
“ I love love in all its forms. We love our partners and have all kinds of experiences with them because of this one emotion,” she said.
