Kwa-Thema – Khwezi Malothe organised a youth career expo at the Kwa-Thema Seventh Day Adventist Church on November 3.
The expo helped equip the youth with the tools to help them decide what to study after Grade 12 and gave them clarity based on what they wanted to be in life and how they could reach their goals.
“We wanted to ensure learners stay motivated and inspired. We introduced them to new areas of professional interest and helped them focus on improving their weaknesses before enhancing their strengths,” Malothe said.
The event invited the Ekurhuleni East Tvet College representatives, who gave professional and career advice to the learners.

“Eduvos graced us with their presence. Eduvos is one of SA’s biggest independent private higher education institutes, with 12 campuses across SA. The expo, attended by 80 learners, was a huge success,” he added.
Tumelo Tlelima, a structural engineer, spoke about civil engineering as a career. He elaborated on the entry requirements, different graduation levels and what to expect after graduation.
“I provided a well-rounded view of what civil engineering is about and its opportunities to assist the learners in making the right choice.
“I mentioned that depending on which school one chooses to attend, one might never get a reliable introduction to the different options after matric. Learners are just told to work hard and get good marks, but life after matric is still vague,” said Tlelima.
He added that from as early as Grade Nine, a learner should have an idea of what career to pursue based on solid, reliable information received on different careers.
“To the best of my knowledge, I provided solid and reliable information based on my career as a civil engineer. As advice, parents must make the time to attend career expo events to collect information along with their children.
“And they should provide structured guidance at home so the children can achieve the requirements of that specific field,” he added.
Sihle Mpotulo, a financial manager, addressed financial literacy, touching on the advantages of studying financial management. He spoke about managing one’s finances to live a debt-free life.
“This is a crucial skill to have as an adult, not just professionally but also as an individual. I opened myself to be accessible to the learners to develop such skills or to understand financial management as a course,” he said.
The event offered food and refreshments to all the attendees. Malothe said he aims to make this career expo an annual event because he was pleased with the turnout.
“The panel delivered their hearts out and are still willing to help every learner needing assistance in any field.
“The event helped the learners have a vision of what they aspire to become in life and how they can turn their dreams into reality through having the right tools,” he concluded.
