Kwa-Thema – Vandalism and theft have plagued the Margaret Maltman Crèche over the past few years.

“We have been the target of many burglaries. Some people manage to get in and steal from us,” explained Nowi Morare, the school’s principal.

The thugs have made off with printers, blankets, cleaning supplies and toiletries.

Margaret, as the crèche is known, was established in 1954 and caters to children from infants to six years old.

It is a beacon of hope in the community.

“The electric fence, electrical wiring and plumbing have been stripped on most of the property. Our kitchen did not have any power supply for months. We have recently replaced toilets and urinals after the ones we had were vandalised,” she added.

The roof and ceiling have many holes because they were the entry points in most of the break-ins.

“We need to replace the whole roof because the one we have is asbestos,” said Morare.

The property’s alarm system was also damaged. The school appeals to the community and business people to help restore it.
