Local schools help Gauteng to glory

Learners from various Ekurhuleni schools helped Gauteng win the SA schools sports championships in Pretoria in December.

The learners, competing in various disciplines including basketball, wheelchair tennis, gymnastics and rugby sevens, were selected to represent the province at the annual schools competition held at the University of Pretoria and other small venues in the city from December 13 to 15.

Gauteng collected 11 medals – seven gold, one silver and three bronze to get first place.

KwaZulu-Natal followed in second place with nine medals (three golds, five silver and one bronze). The Western Cape grabbed the last podium place with 12 medals (two gold, four silver and five bronze).

“Team Gauteng did well by obtaining first place. We are proud of everyone who contributed to this success,” said Ekurhuleni North district sports co-ordinator Solly Chokoe.

Gymnasts from Usizolwethu LSEN School in Daveyton and table tennis players from Etwatwa Secondary School and Ephes Mamkeli Secondary School in Wattville flew the Benoni flag aloft.

Sir Pierre van Ryneveld High School learners and others from schools in Bedfordview and Ekurhuleni South represented the province in basketball.

Khopolo Motebang, from Germiston’s Ithembelihle LSEN School, was among the learners who battled for the province in wheelchair tennis. He ranked 13th on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) junior wheelchair singles rankings.
