Tsakani – The Michael Zulu Primary School held an HIV/Aids and GBV awareness day on November 25. The event brought together learners, teachers, parents and community members to raise awareness, promote education and take a collective stand against HIV/Aids and GBV.
School principal Lindiwe Vilakazi said Mthuthuzeli Skhosana from the Tsakane Treatment Action Campaign gave a powerful awareness speech on HIV/Aids to the learners.
“He warned them about the disease’s dangers and provided valuable information on how it is transmitted. He also shared ways to prevent infection, emphasising the importance of safe practices, responsible behaviour, and regular testing,” Vilakazi said.
She said the Thabang Xaba Foundation was there to give the learners important information about GBV. She said the interactive presentation helped to break the silence around GBV, encouraging the learners to speak out against abuse and support those affected by it.
“The event took a sombre turn when professional nurse Sphiwe Sithole led the gathering in a candle-lighting ceremony and a moment of silence.
“This poignant tribute honoured the memories of those who have lost their lives to HIV/Aids, those living with the disease and those affected by it,” she added.
Towards the end of the event, the participants made a collective commitment to take action against HIV/Aids and GBV.
In closing, the school’s deputy principal, David Twala, stressed the importance of ongoing education, awareness and support for those confronting the issues.
“Our HIV/Aids and GBV awareness day was a resounding success, demonstrating the school’s commitment to addressing these critical issues.
“As the school community continues to work together to promote awareness, education and support, they serve as a shining example of the power of collective action in driving positive change,” concluded Twala.
