Being connected opens doors to education, enhances crime-fighting efforts, improves access to healthcare services, and fuels economic and social development. MTN is dedicated to making a real difference by expanding this access, helping more people benefit from the power of connectivity.
This is why MTN continues to invest significantly in South Africa’s digital infrastructure and supports local communities everywhere.
The successful deployment of advanced network infrastructure in Gauteng, is an excellent example of this commitment. This year, users in Gauteng have benefited from increased network capacity and improved customer experience, and we aim to connect even more areas in 2025. In this way, we are significantly improving connectivity while addressing critical community concerns, so that people in this area can enjoy the benefits of the connected world.
We are proud to report that the network in Gauteng remains exceptionally resilient, with weekly availability consistently above 99%. To date, nearly 2,900 sites have been modernised, and our network now includes close to 990 5G sites and nearly 2,880 4G sites. These efforts reflect MTN’s dedication to enhancing South Africa’s digital infrastructure, driving digital inclusion, and contributing to the socio-economic growth of the regions it serves. Our investment across South Africa underscore MTN’s commitment to enhancing connectivity and addressing pressing issues like lack of access to the digital economy. By deploying advanced network infrastructure, we are taking proactive steps to foster a safer, more connected environment, where more people can reap the benefits of the digital age.
Moreover, according to the MyBroadband Mobile Network Quality Report for Q3 2024, MTN has been recognised as having the best overall network in South Africa. MTN also dominated network rankings in major metropolitan areas, including Gauteng, further cementing its position as the leading provider of reliable, high-quality connectivity. Additionally, umlaut, an independent global benchmarking organisation, has granted MTN its “Best In Test” certification, reinforcing MTN’s position as South Africa’s best network.
Despite the positives, illegal connections, vandalism, and battery theft remain challenging in Gauteng. In the past reporting period, replacements were provided at 118 affected sites, ensuring users could continue to stay connected.
