Tsakani – Kopano Community Projects (NPO) hosts soup kitchens in Langaville every Saturday at the Gospel of God Church.
The soup kitchen has been successfully functional for four years and recently decided to invest in a gardening project at the church. The project received support from an NGO called Food and Tree for Africa (FTA) on October 18.
“We partnered with Dusty Sports Occasional Knockouts towards the development of our gardening project which aims to provide the community as well as our soup kitchen with food daily.
“FTA provided us with gardening equipment, plants, seeds and knowledge based on home gardening skills,” said Kopano Community Projects founder Dimakatso Tsikane.
Tsikane added that their NPO has also identified individuals and families who need a helping hand, saying the garden will extend its fruitfulness to those families.
“We also do door-to-door campaigns as a method of identifying the needs of our community members and we make sure that those in need receive what they seek,” she said.
Busi Wawa from FTA said she must teach the methods of market gardening citing that this is a small-scale production system of vegetables, herbs and fruits grown as cash crops.
“FTA assists communities with greening, for people to develop into gardening for them to eat organic and natural food. My role is to provide knowledge and training towards better care of each garden,” said Wawa.

She mentioned that it is important for everyone to gain gardening skills, citing that home gardens provide nutritious food conveniently.
“Food from my garden is full of nutrition and gives me the ability to choose what to eat, when and how.
“People need to know that to own a garden, you do not need a lot of space but rather, you need space that is the size of a door,” she added.
She concluded by mentioning that is it important to know the benefits of intercropping and how it positively benefits the garden.
