Tsakani – Letswalo Marobane (32) and his team organised members of the community to come together and clean their local park along Ndabezitha Street on August 17. The purpose of the clean-up was not only to keep the children’s play area clean but to utilise the public area as a marketplace.

“Many people have businesses but do not have space to keep those businesses operating.”

Marobane also mentioned they planned to fix broken swings within the play area while giving everything a fresh look by painting the fixed swings.

“My team and I cannot do everything on our own; with the help from the community and business owners, the vision will come into reality,” Marobane said.

He also mentioned that their idea was well received by many people, including church members from Kwa-Thema and Tsakani.

Community member Sibusiso Nhlapho said if parks are dirty, we risk contracting diseases. The smell of the rubbish also causes pollution.

“Not only is the park dirty, but everywhere around it. I am glad the community agreed to join hands and fight pollution and littering,” he said.

Nhlapho also mentioned he hoped the Tsakani social market idea would receive support from their ward councillor.

He said many people do not respect park areas and often burn tyres near the slides and swings the children play on.

“It is difficult to reprimand an adult who sees nothing wrong with their wrongful actions. I think it would work best to have a sign that will make people aware of the rules and regulations of the park.

“It will also prevent people from littering and/or burning things in front of the play area,” he added.

He further cited that as a businessperson, he supports having a marketplace at the park as it will help many people find their feet as entrepreneurs.
