Before you hit the road: Get your vehicle checked
Start your trip on the right note by visiting an RMI-accredited workshop or vehicle testing centre for a vehicle safety check.
These checks focus on critical components like tyres, brakes, and windscreen wipers to ensure your vehicle is in a safe operating condition. Taking this precaution will give you peace of mind and reduce the risk of unexpected issues on the road.
On the road: What to do in case of an accident or breakdown
Even with the best preparation, accidents or breakdowns can happen.
In case of an accident, motor body repair specialist businesses that are accredited members of SAMBRA have these three top tips:
1. Check
• Stop your vehicle safely, keep calm, switch on your hazard lights, and assess the surroundings.
• Check for injuries but do not provide medical assistance unless trained to do so.
• Take photos of the accident scene before moving any vehicles. It is advisable to take these from a meter or two away as well as some close ups
• Wait for authorities to arrive.
• Ensure that you understand your insurer’s requirements in regard to any admissions of guilt or negligence on the scene of the accident.

1. Move your car off the road if it is safe to do so and turn on your hazard lights.
2. Place a warning triangle a safe distance behind your vehicle to alert other drivers.

Important tips to keep in mind
• Before admitting liability at an accident scene, make sure you understand your insurer’s policy requirements.
• Always confirm that towing services are authorised by your insurer.

• Contact details of next of kin (ICE contacts) in case you are unable to provide these.
Reporting crashes online with NaTIS
Ipeleng Mabusela, RMI CEO: strategy and corporate support, says motorists may not know that they can also report minor crashes through the NaTIS website instead of having to go into a police station. This service is legally binding if terms and conditions are met.
Key points to remember:
• Minor crashes must be reported within 24 hours or the next working day.
• A crash report number (CRN) will be generated automatically for insurance purposes.
• Crashes involving injuries, fatalities, hit-and-runs, or five or more vehicles must still be reported to the nearest police station.
• Reporting via NaTIS is free of charge, but charges may apply for data access in the future.
• The information submitted by you can be made available to your insurance service provider.
