Springs taxi drivers were gifted with brand new spectacles at the Springs Taxi Rank to enhance their eyesight, on August 22.

The Springs Taxi Association partnered with ABSA and CFAO to keep a promise made on July 16 as the drivers underwent eye check-ups for visual defects.

The drivers with visual defects received a promise of new glasses after being assessed by the optometrist, Dr Thabo Matlou.

A total of 501 drivers’ eyes were tested and out of that number, 231 drivers received new spectacles.

The association’s secretary, Themba Ginindza expressed his gratitude on behalf of the recipients.

“We are grateful for this opportunity because we tend to neglect our eyesight and may cause problems with driving safely.

On the day the drivers tested their eyesight, their blood pressure was also checked. Ginindza added the experience was educational as it taught them about different health conditions that may lead to bad eyesight.

“Through this campaign, we have been informed about how blood pressure and diabetes are secondary causes of bad eyesight.

“We will continue with campaigns of this nature so that our taxi drivers can benefit,” he said.

While some received spectacles to improve their sight while driving, others received reading glasses. One of the recipients was Cornelius Mavumengwana.

“Yesterday I was excited when I received a call to collect my spectacles. Today we received our glasses as they had promised us a month and a half ago,” Mavumengwana added.
