On Nov. 8, 2010, the final evening of Bich Ha Pan‘s life, she ate dinner along with her daughter Jennifer Pan after which went out line-dancing, because the 53-year-old did each Monday.

Bich returned to their house in Markham, Ontario (about 19 miles northeast of downtown Toronto), at round 9:30 p.m., Jennifer informed a York Regional Police detective hours later, as seen in interview footage included within the Netflix documentary What Jennifer Did.

Later that evening, Jennifer continued, she heard her mother calling for her dad, Huei Hann Pan, after which a person appeared upstairs and proceeded to tie Jennifer’s arms behind her again, telling her he had a gun and to do what he stated. He demanded she present him the place the cash was, she informed police.

Jennifer stated she was tied to the highest of the banister and will hear her mother ask, as she and her husband have been being led downstairs to the basement, if her daughter might go along with them. The “final thing I heard them say was, ‘You lied to us, you lied to us,'” Jennifer informed police, “then I heard two pops. My mother screamed, I yelled out for her, then a pair extra pops.”

Whereas her mom died on the scene, her 57-year-old father was taken to a close-by hospital, having survived being shot within the face close to his eye. However Hann spent the earliest days of the investigation in an induced coma, in response to detectives.

Within the documentary, murder investigator Det. Alan Cooke recalled worrying Hann would die, leaving Jennifer as their solely witness.
