Kwa-Thema – U15 netball teams played friendly games at the Mehlomakhulu netball court on October 26.

The atmosphere came alive when the supporters cheered for their favourite teams. The Wings went three goals ahead in the first quarter when the Rabbit players tried to score but had no luck.

The Wings scored twice in the second quarter, ending the quarter 5-3 to Rabbit.

“They were still getting into the momentum of the game in the first quarter and wasted goal-scoring opportunities,” said The Wings coach Jane Mayisa.

According to her, good communication between the attackers and the defenders is the cornerstone of a successful game. She said she was thrilled that her team led from the first two quarters until the end of the game.

“The game did not begin as expected. My team did not play well in the first quarter, and I don’t know why. When the team returned in the second quarter, I saw the dedication and a change in the atmosphere.

“They went in with so much energy and determination, and, as a result, we scored two more goals,” she said.

Mayisa said the team combination worked in their favour because each member’s strength worked to their advantage.

She said her team’s biggest mistake was crowding during the game. They didn’t run enough and, in the first quarter, did not defend the ball.

“I am glad they managed to rectify those minor mistakes. My goal shooter’s first mistake was that she constantly remained behind her defender.

“She is not a good jumper. I advised her always to position herself in front of the defender. This made a huge difference and contributed to our good performance,” she added.

The game ended victoriously for The Wings with a score of 10-6. The Rabbits’ coach, Vusimuzi Masolo, said he was happy with how his team played, saying they played well in the third and fourth quarters.

“We encountered many challenges in the first and second quarters mainly because our opponents were taller than us.

“I used my U13 team to play an U15 team because we are preparing for an upcoming tournament, and I need my U13 team to be well prepared for those games,” he said.

Masolo said he advised his team to refrain from playing high balls just before the third quarter because they were an advantage to the other team.

He said he wanted to start a netball quiz for his team, saying that the quiz would focus on training the shooters.

“The match we played was too clean. It encountered problems with the shooters. They did not score more goals. During practice, I will implement shooting skills through drills and netball quizzes,” he added.

He said that would drastically improve his team’s shooting skills and enable them to play a game that lets them pay attention to the details.
