A tragic attack has occurred in New York City.
Brian Thompson—the CEO of UnitedHealthcare—was pronounced dead Dec. 4 at Manhattan’s Mount Sinai Hospital after being shot by an unidentified gunman in what is believed to be a targeted attack, per New York City Police Department. He was 50.
“Police have told us that it is that it was a planned attack,” Thompson’s wife, Paulette, said in an interview with NBC News Dec. 4, “that’s all they’ve told us. They’re looking for the man who shot him.”
Thompson was outside the New York Hilton hotel on Manhattan’s Sixth Avenue when he was shot in the chest and leg at around 6:46 a.m., a spokesperson for the New York City Police Department told NBC News.
Police commissioner Jessica Tisch provided additional details in a press conference, sharing that the suspect seemed to be “lying in wait for several minutes.”
“Many people passed the suspect,” she continued, per NBC News. “But he appeared to wait for his intended target.”
