The season 5 finale of Yellowstone paid tribute to Bob Avila. Before the last episode began, the Paramount series introduced the episode with a message dedicated to the late horsemen, who died earlier this year. Hollywood Life explains more about Avila, his life, career, death and participation in Yellowstone below.

Who Was Bob Avila?

Yellowstone fans were met with an on-screen message as season 5 episode 14 premiered. “This episode is dedicated to Bob Avila,” the note read. “See you down the dusty trail, Amigo.”

Avila was an avid horse rider who died at the age of 72 on November 9, 2024, according to multiple outlets. He was considered a legend of an equine trainer. He not only raised horses — he also trained them and taught others how to follow in his footsteps. According to Sports Illustrated, Avila spent nearly 20 years on a ranch in Temecula, California, before relocating to Arizona.

When Was Bob Avila in Yellowstone?

Avila appeared in season 3 of Yellowstone opposite Kevin Costner, who played John Dutton. During episode 3 of that season, Dutton and Avila were seen purchasing items for horses, with Avila sharing suggestions with Dutton.

Did Bob Avila Have a Family?

Yes, Avila is survived by his wife, Dana Avila, and his son, BJ Avila, per Sports Illustrated.

What Was Bob Avila’s Cause of Death?

Avila’s cause of death was not publicly disclosed. However, he was attending the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) World Championship the day he died, per Quarter Horse News. The outlet reported that Avila was there to help his wife, Dana, and other horse riders.

In November 2024, the AQHA revealed that Avila had died, honoring him in  a social media announcement.

“The AQHA family has lost a legend,” the Instagram post read. “AQHA Professional Horseman and American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame member Bob Avila passed away today at the age of 72. We extend our heartfelt thoughts and prayers to his wife, Dana, son, BJ Avila, and the rest of the Avila family and their extended AQHA family. We will post funeral and memorial details as they become available.”
