Kwa-Thema – Siphsihle Mabena won a gold medal for javelin and shot put in the Gauteng Sports for the Physically Disabled Youth trials recently.

“He now qualifies to participate in the SA Sports Association for the Physically Disabled in March next year,” explained coach Aubrey Mathibela of the Kwa-Thema Disabled Sports Club.

Mathibela also believes the young athlete is ready to compete internationally.

“It is not an easy process to get all the accreditation to complete on the international stages. It is also expensive. Our athletes have to fly to Ireland to be checked and placed in the correct categories based on their physical disabilities,” he explained.

Mathibela hopes the club will raise enough money to get Siphesihle his accreditation by year-end.

“This is the only way to ensure that when he does well in the SAs next year, he will move on to an international competition,” added Mathibela.

Nhlanhla Mbeneng, also from the club, won gold in the 100, 200 and 400m races. Mathibela thanked businessmen Jabulani Kubheka and Willie Msomi for supporting the team financially.
